Bareilly is a prominent city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, situated on the banks of the Ramganga River. It serves as the headquarters of the Bareilly Division and is an important part of the Rohilkhand region. The city is located approximately 252 kilometers north of Lucknow, the state capital, and about 250 kilometers east of New Delhi, the capital of India.
Bareilly is the seventh-largest metropolitan city in Uttar Pradesh and ranks among the major urban centers of the country. It has also been selected under the Government of India’s Smart Cities Mission, aimed at improving urban infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
The city is known by several names that reflect its rich cultural and religious heritage. It is popularly called “Nath Nagri” because of the presence of four ancient Shiva temples located in different directions of the city—Dhopeshwar Nath, Madni Nath, Alakha Nath, and Trivati Nath. Bareilly is also known as “Bareilly Sharif” due to its association with renowned Islamic saints and religious institutions, including Ala Hazrat Imam Ahmed Raza Khan, Shah Sharafat Miyan, and Khanqah-e-Niyazia. Additionally, the city is famous as “Zari Nagari” for its flourishing zari and embroidery industry, which has earned national and international recognition.
Historically, Bareilly was part of the ancient kingdom of Panchala, one of the most significant centers of Vedic civilization. Panchala was renowned for its contribution to culture, learning, and spirituality. Archaeological excavations at Ahichhatra, the ancient capital of Northern Panchala, have uncovered numerous historical artifacts, including coins, sculptures, and pottery dating back to the pre-Gupta and Gupta periods. These discoveries highlight the region’s rich historical and cultural legacy.
The area was one of the important Mahajanapadas of ancient India and played a significant role in the political and cultural development of the region. By the 12th century, Kshatriya communities had established settlements in the area. According to local tradition, a Kshatriya ruler named Jagat Singh founded a village called Jagatpur. His two sons, Bans Dev and Barel Dev, further developed the settlement, and it is believed that the name “Bareilly” originated from their names.
Today, Bareilly stands as a vibrant city that successfully blends its historical heritage with modern development, making it an important cultural, religious, and economic center of Uttar Pradesh. Read more...
